Ein Final Fantasy-Spiel auf einer Liste der besten Soulslikes? Die japanischen Entwickler*innen von Team Ninja machen es möglich – und verewigen sich mit Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin das erste von zwei Malen in unserem Ranking. Die ungewöhnliche Zusammenarbeit zum Prequel, das die Vorgeschichte zum ersten Final Fantasy-Spiel erzählt, hüllt das Team Ninja-typische Kampfsystem aus Nioh oder Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty in den Mantel des fulminanten Franchises; und zwar mit Erfolg.

Neben Fledermäusen, Skeletten und Goblins dürfen sich Final Fantasy-Fans deshalb natürlich auch auf bekannte Gegner aus dem ersten Ableger freuen, darunter beispielsweise der Kaktor, Sahagin, oder Tonberry. Statt in rundenbasierten Auseinandersetzungen wird hier aber natürlich in Echtzeit und bester Souls-Manier gekloppt, wobei ein komplexes Job- und voll geladenes Loot-System dafür sorgen, dass ihr euch auch mal die Menüs anschauen müsst.

Neben der überraschend gelungenen Kombination von Final Fantasy-Setting und Soulslike-Combat ist eine der größten Stärken von Stranger of Paradise der absolut lächerliche und ironische Ton. Protagonist Jack ist einer der größten Stinkstiefel der Videospielgeschichte, der leidenschaftliche hervorgebrachte Schicksalstiraden auch mal mit einem „Bullshit“ abwinkt, um sich anschließend mit aus seinen Bluetooth-Kopfhörern plärrender Rockmusik zu verabschieden. Ihr merkt schon: FF Origins nimmt sich nie für voll und stellt damit eine wunderbare Abwechslung zu den sonst so ernsten Soulslikes dar.

Platz 5: Another Crab’s Treasure

Das neueste Spiel auf unserer Liste ist noch nicht einmal ein halbes Jahr alt, mit seinen genialen Einfällen, der gelungenen Genre-Mischung und dem einzigartigen Setting aber bereits jetzt in unsere Herzen geschwommen: Die Rede ist von Another Crab’s Treasure. Denn wenn ihr langsam davon angeödet seid, dass auf dieser Liste ein Dark Fantasy-Titel den nächsten jagt, dann solltet ihr diesem Meeres-Trip auf den Grund gehen.

Statt Burgen und Drachen erwarten euch hier nämlich Korallen und Krabben: Another Crab’s Treasure bietet eine kunterbunte Wasserwelt, die auf farbenfrohe Tiefseebewohner setzt und die malerischen Algenwälder oder Sandbuchten mit einer fiesen Umweltverschmutzung kontrastiert. Gameplay-technisch flirtet Arielles Sebastian derweil gleichermaßen mit dem Soulslike-Format und dem 3D-Plattformer-Genre, womit sich Another Crab’s Treasure herrlich erfrischend spielt.

Trotz spaßiger Sprungpassagen müsst ihr dabei nicht auf knackige Bosskämpfe verzichten, auch wenn das Unterwasser-Abenteuer im Vergleich zu anderen Kandidaten auf dieser Liste eher zu der leichteren Sorte gehört. Hinzu kommt eine ordentliche Prise Humor, mit der sich Another Crab’s Treasure weiter von der Konkurrenz abheben kann und insgesamt eine äußerst spritzige Soulslike-Erfahrung bietet, die ihr so wirklich nirgendwo sonst bekommt.
