EA Sports` Vorzeige-Basketballspiel hat in der 2001er Ausgabe leichte Verspätung. Normalerweise erscheint es parallel mit den anderen EA Sports-Titeln im Dezember. So gab es zum ersten mal seit sechs Jahren zu Weihnachten keinen Titel der NBA Live-Reihe auf dem Gabentisch. Stattdessen steckte man noch zwei zusätzliche Monate in die Entwicklung – ob sich diese gelohnt haben, erfahrt Ihr in unserem Test.

Gameplay

In Sachen Menü-Bedienung hat EA Sports das Spiel im Vergleich zum Vorgänger kräftig entschlackt. Jeder Menüpunkt ist nun ohne Suchen und umständliche Klickorgien zu erreichen. Außerdem ist das Menü nun kein Performance-Fresser mehr, da es ohne 3D-Animationen auskommt – der Stil orientiert sich nun an FIFA 2001.

Leider hat EA Sports auch an anderer Stelle entschlackt bzw. eher eingespart: Es fehlen der langweilige und deshalb auch nicht sonderlich beliebte 3-Punkte-Modus, und leider fehlt auch der Trainings-Modus. Gerade für Anfänger war er ein guter Einstieg ins Spiel, um die ganzen Bewegungen zu lernen. Die beliebten Modi Freundschaftsspiel, Playoff-Runde und die One on One-Duelle in den Hinterhöfen sind weiterhin im Spiel. Hinzu kommt noch der seit letztem Jahr bekannte Franchise-Modi, bei dem man die Möglichkeit hat, seine Mannschaft in der PC-internen Liga zu etablieren.

Natürlich finden sich im Spiel – wie jedes Jahr – alle 29 Mannschaften der NBA wieder, dazu kommen die Basketball-Stars der letzten 50 Jahre – wie z.B. Michael Jordan oder Magic Johnson. Der Simulationscharakter der NBA-Reihe wurde im neuesten Sprössling noch weiter ausgebaut, besonders in Korbnähe gibt es nun mehr Möglichkeiten einen gelungenen Wurf zu machen. Dazu kommen noch ausgefeiltere Fakes, die mit ihren vielen Tastenkombinationen schon ein Gamepad mit mindestens acht oder besser gleich zehn Tasten erfordern. Die Anzahl der Tastenkombinationen hängt allerdings auch vom Schwierigkeitsgrad ab: So haben Einsteiger eine überschaubare Zahl von Kombinationsmöglichkeiten, während Profis den absoluten Overkill an Verteidungs- und Angriffsspielzügen genießen dürfen.
