Trotz mittlerweile recht abgeflautem Schneeaufkommen präsentiert Konami mit ESPN Winter X Games Snowboarding 2 ein neues Snowboard-Spiel, das dem angestammten Spitzenreiter SSX Tricky das Leben schwer machen soll. Mit welchen Mitteln dies versucht wird und ob sich der Ausflug aufs Brett trotz EA Big-Vormachtstellung lohnt, könnt Ihr in unserem Test erfahren.

Ich mach Karriere

Um aus der mittlerweile unübersichtlichen Menge an Snowboard-Games herauszustechen, muss man sich schon etwas einfallen lassen. Und was bei Dark Summit der Story-Adventure-Modus war, ist bei ESPN Winter X Games Snowboarding 2 der Karriere-Modus: Als unbekannter Snowboarder müsst Ihr versuchen, es bis zu den für den Spielnamen verantwortlichen Wettbewerben zu schaffen und dort als Sieger auf dem Podest zu landen.

Doch aller Anfang ist schwer. Eure Ausrüstung ist gerade mal unterer Standard, und das Wintersportgebiet, in dem Ihr startet, sprüht nicht gerade vor herausragenden Strecken.
Also schnell bei ein paar Wettbewerben angemeldet, um mit erfolgreichem Abschluss die Siegprämien für eine bessere Ausrüstung ausgeben zu können sowie Eure Charisma-Wertung auffüllen zu können.
Denn das ermöglicht Euch Foto-Sessions, bei denen Ihr recht schnell einen Sponsor finden könnt, was die Ausrüstungsfrage erheblich erleichtert.

Doch leichter gesagt als getan: Eure Fähigkeiten sind anfangs noch sehr beschränkt und jede Drehung wird zu einer schwierigen Aufgabe. Mit jedem Lauf erhöhen sich Eure Werte langsam aber stetig.
Solltet Ihr es eilig haben, einen bestimmten Wert nach oben zu drücken, könnt Ihr auch in der Sporthalle trainieren – für ein Entgelt versteht sich.

Abgesehen von den anfänglich ziemlich frustrierenden Trickmöglichkeiten müsst Ihr auch auf Eure Gesundheit achten. Jeder Sturz kostet Punkte und bei Absinken der Gesundheit auf null bleibt nur noch der kostenpflichtige Besuch im Krankenhaus.

Insgesamt könnt Ihr Euch in fünf -später auch kostenpflichtigen- Wettbewerben einschreiben:
In Snowboarder X liefert Ihr Euch ein Rennen mit anderen Snowboardern; im Slope Style müsst Ihr so viele Trickpunkte einfahren wie nur irgend möglich; Super Pipe – hier heizt Ihr durch eine gigantische Halfpipe; Big Air: nur eine Chance, um gewaltige Punkte einzusammeln und der selbsterklärende Free Ride.

Der Karriere-Modus bietet erstaunlich viel Tiefgang, erfordert jedoch auch viel Geduld vom Spieler, denn die Charakter-Werte steigen nur sehr langsam.
Wem die Karriere daher zu mühselig ist, dürfte mit dem X-Games-Modus seine Erfüllung finden, in dem Ihr mit einem Snowboarder Eurer Wahl an den Wettbewerben teilnehmt.

Um Euch an die komplexe Steuerung zu gewöhnen, wurde ein vorbildliches interaktives Tutorial integriert, dass Euch alle Feinheiten erläutert.
