Nach dem Playstation-Gerangel “Smackdown!” – ebenfalls aus dem Hause THQ – war die Erwartungshaltung an “Royal Rumble” recht gro\u00df, handelt es sich bei dem Titel doch um eine Umsetzung des gleichnamigen Naomi-Automaten. <\/b>
Die Vorfreude wird aber bereits im Optionsmen\u00fc arg ged\u00e4mpft: Statt mit den gewohnt opulenten Auswahlm\u00f6glichkeiten sieht man sich mit nur drei Spielvarianten und einundzwanzig K\u00e4mpfern konfrontiert. Neben dem Versus-Mode mit bis zu drei menschlichen Mitspielern, bietet sich f\u00fcr Solisten nur die Wahlm\u00f6glichkeit zwischen dem Exhibtion- und dem Royal Rumble-Modus.
Entscheidet man sich f\u00fcr das exhibitionistische Treiben, wirft man sich mit seinem Lieblingsk\u00e4mpfer und einem Tag-Team-Mitstreiter in die Kampfarena. Hier z\u00e4hlt nur Sieg oder Niederlage in einem Knockout-Turnier gegen zehn zuf\u00e4llig ausgew\u00e4hlte Gegner. Der Teamgenosse wartet au\u00dferhalb des Ringes auf seinen, \u00fcber eine Button-Kombination ausgel\u00f6sten Einsatz und nimmt nach diesem kurzen Zuruf aktiv am Geschehen teil. In der Regel sind seine Handlungsm\u00f6glichkeiten auf das simple Verm\u00f6beln der Kontrahenten und nett anzusehende Showeinlagen beschr\u00e4nkt. W\u00e4hlt man das “k\u00f6nigliche Rumpeln”, treten sich neun Wrestler gleichzeitig auf die F\u00fc\u00dfe und beharken sich innerhalb eines Zeitlimits ohne R\u00fccksicht auf Verluste. Wer in der Lage ist, den Ring stehend zu verlassen, darf die Siegertroph\u00e4e f\u00fcr sich beanspruchen.
Der Weg zum Wrestler-Gl\u00fcck ist allerdings nicht besonders einfach. Zum einen sind drei Minuten f\u00fcr ein Royal-Rumble-Match einfach zu kurz bemessen, zum anderen l\u00e4sst sich die Steuerung am ehesten mit dem Wort “schwammig” umschreiben. W\u00e4hrend einfache Schl\u00e4ge und Tritte ihr Ziel fast nie verfehlen, greift selbst “The Undertaker” bei W\u00fcrfen und z\u00e4rtlichen Umarmungen h\u00e4ufig ins Leere. Dieses Manko ist nicht auf spielerisches Unverm\u00f6gen zur\u00fcckzuf\u00fchren, sondern auf die fehlende Autofocus-Funktion, deren Abwesenheit sich schmerzlich bemerkbar macht. Zudem ist auch das Special-Repertoire auf die gel\u00e4ufigsten Griffe beschr\u00e4nkt worden und wirkt dadurch auff\u00e4llig unvollst\u00e4ndig.

Auch grafisch rei\u00dft sich Royal Rumble widererwartend nur ein Bein aus. Zwar sind die Wrestling-Stars h\u00fcbsch anzusehen, doch sobald Bewegung ins Spiel kommt, verblasst der sch\u00f6ne Schein: Ungelenk wie Marionetten t\u00e4nzeln die Akteure \u00fcber den Bildschirm und k\u00f6nnen nicht einmal ansatzweise mit den Kollegen der klassischen Beat\u00b4em Up-Liga konkurrieren. Vom spa\u00dfigen Mehrspielermodus abgesehen, bietet das Spiel einfach nicht genug Tiefgang, um Wrestling-Fans langfristig zu unterhalten.
