Ich mag die eingangs genannten Vorbilder, stehe total auf Indie-Games und bin auch noch in tierische Helden vernarrt. Kurzum: Ich bin geradezu pr\u00e4destiniert f\u00fcr Spirit of the North. Trotzdem habe ich mich w\u00e4hrend der ersten 30 Minuten gefragt, ob das jetzt tats\u00e4chlich alles sein soll: Ich lenke einen in Bewegung h\u00fcbsch aussehenden Fuchs durch eine recht grob gerenderte Winterwelt – Schneefeld, Eish\u00f6hle, ein paar Felsnadeln und hoch oben am Himmel ein waberndes rotes Band.\u00a0

Doch au\u00dfer einem anderen (Geister-) Fuchs und ein paar verstreuten Skeletten ist da nichts, ich empfinde die Spielwelt als sehr leer – keine Menschen, keine Items und Objekte, keine Gegner, keine Gespr\u00e4che, keine greifbare Geschichte. Daf\u00fcr: Spazierg\u00e4nge durch hohen Schnee, wo ich technisch mittelpr\u00e4chtige Spuren hinterlasse, und schlecht steuerbare Rutschpartien auf dem Fuchspopo, wenn sich die H\u00f6hle zu einer \u00fcberdimensionierten Bobbahn wandelt. Bald finde ich heraus: Hin und wieder liegt ein Wanderstock abseits des Hauptpfades, den kann mein Fuchs aufnehmen und zu einer \u00d6tzi-\u00e4hnlichen Leiche in der N\u00e4he bringen \u2013 damit helfe ich der Seele des verblichenen Wandersmannes und schalte (sehr langsam) neue Fellfarben f\u00fcr Meister Reineke frei.<\/p><\/p>\n

Fox Stranding: In manchen Einstellungen erinnert die Landschaft von Spirit of the North an das neue Kojima-Game. \u00a9 4P\/Screenshot<\/div>\n<\/div>\nDie Interaktion mit dem anderen, dem Spektralfuchs ist sporadisch und unklar – mal muss ich der Geistersilhouette hinterhereilen, mal hilft sie mir, wenn ich in der N\u00e4he roter Ranken ersch\u00f6pft darnieder sinke. Die Spielmechanik dahinter, warum mir diese d\u00e4monisch leuchtenden Ranken, die ich gef\u00fchlt schon in zwei anderen Dutzend Games gesehen habe, ein anderes Mal nichts anhaben k\u00f6nnen, verschlie\u00dft sich mir auf den ersten Blick. Als mein Fuchs endlich neue F\u00e4higkeiten erh\u00e4lt, wird Spirit of the North endlich weniger tr\u00e4ge und eindimensional: Wo immer im Level ab sofort eine blaue Blume sprie\u00dft, kann ich dort Energie aufsammeln – die brauche ich f\u00fcr antike Steinmechanismen, so \u00f6ffne ich T\u00fcren, drehe Schalter oder lasse mal eine Kugel gen Tal rollen. Daher gilt: Wenn m\u00f6glich nach der Benutzung der blauen Energie gleich die n\u00e4chste Blume anvisieren und auftanken!\n

Wer die Wege kennt, eilt theoretisch in unter drei Stunden durch Spirit of the North, beim normalen ersten Durchlauf mit ein bisschen St\u00f6ckchen-zu-Leichen-bringen solltet ihr aber eher f\u00fcnf bis sieben Stunden einplanen. Auch weil ab F\u00e4higkeit zwei und drei mehr Suchen und Ausprobieren hinzukommt: Auf Knopfdruck kann ich nun den K\u00f6rper des Fuchses verlassen (z.B. wenn der einen Schalter beschwert) und als Geist dann einige Sekunden \u00fcbers Wasser flitzen. Oder per Dash-Funktion breitere Schluchten \u00fcberspringen \u2013 leider f\u00fchlt sich vor allem letztere Option nie so genau an, wie man das von einem Plattform-lastigen Spiel erwarten kann. Viel zu oft h\u00fcpfe ich neben den anvisierten Felsvorsprung und muss einige l\u00e4stige Meter nochmal laufen.\n

Die sp\u00e4rliche Mythologie des Spiels wird wie in Journey durch Wandmalereien vermittelt – die wei\u00dfe Fellfarbe des Fuchses l\u00e4sst sich freischalten. \u00a9 4P\/Screenshot<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\u00dcberhaupt ist Spirit of the North nicht so sauber programmiert, wie ich mir das w\u00fcnsche – oder wie andere, spielmechanisch \u00e4hnlich gelagerte Titel das hinbekommen haben. Auch das normale Springen f\u00fchlt sich ungenau an, in Kombination mit einem Geysir-Boost werden Flugrichtung und Landung zur Gl\u00fcckssache. Weil nirgendwo ein Bildschirmtod lauert, macht das den Titel zwar nie frustrierend – unsch\u00f6n bleibt es aber \u00fcber die gesamte Spielzeit. Auch das Erkunden der teils wirklich sch\u00f6n gestalteteten Welt (schroffe Felsen, gr\u00fcne Auen, malerische Ruinen) wird mir immer wieder verg\u00e4llt: Entweder wei\u00df ich nicht recht, ob die Entwickler einen Felsen, den ich als Mini-Plattform nutzen will, wirklich daf\u00fcr vorgesehen haben – irgendwie ist das Ding zu schmal und die Kollisionsabfrage zickig. An anderer Stelle streife ich \u00fcber ein Felsplateau und pl\u00f6tzlich darf mein Fuchs nicht weiter – eine unsichtbare Wand torpediert meinen Forscherdrang.\n

Fazit<\/strong><\/h3>Wenn ein Spiel sich das Indie-Highlight Journey<\/a> so augenscheinlich zum Vorbild nimmt – dann muss es sich auch an der stillen Perle von thatgamecompany messen lassen. Leider ist weder die Farbwahl so stilsicher, noch die Musik so grandios. Auch die mysteri\u00f6sen Felszeichnungen, die ich wie in Journey<\/a> \u201eaktivieren\u201c kann, transportieren die extrem vage Story von Spirit of the North nur bedingt – \u00fcberhaupt besitzt der Titel zwar eine entr\u00fcckte Atmosph\u00e4re, vergisst dabei aber fast ganz, dem Spieler wenigstens einen Hauch konkrete Geschichte anzubieten. Die Denkaufgaben gehen in Ordnung und nutzen die verschachtelte Umgebung gut aus – das L\u00f6sen macht wegen der ungenauen Steuerung aber nie so viel Spa\u00df wie theoretisch m\u00f6glich. Unterm Strich ist Spirit of the North eine ambitionierte, durchaus h\u00fcbsch zu hei\u00dfende Finger\u00fcbung eines Indieteams, die aber noch viel Luft nach oben hat.<\/div><\/div>
