An der grundlegenden Spielmechanik hat sich im Vergleich zum Vorg\u00e4nger recht wenig ver\u00e4ndert: Zun\u00e4chst bastelt ihr euch mit einem einfach gehaltenen Editor eine Welt, legt mehrere Eisenbahnschienen mit allerlei Schnick-Schnack wie Gleisen, Weichen, Signalen und zieht Br\u00fccken durch die komplett transformierbare Landschaft. Aber nur Gleise auf einer Karte sind ziemlich \u00f6de, daher k\u00f6nnt ihr Geb\u00e4ude, Fabriken und sonstige Objekte ebenfalls in die Umgebung pflanzen. Diesmal sind die Geb\u00e4ude aber keine reine Dekoration, sondern k\u00f6nnen mit ins Spiel einbezogen werden.
Nach dem Bau der Strecke eurer Tr\u00e4ume oder dem Start auf einer vorgegebenen Karte, k\u00f6nnt ihr euch in den Kontrollstand der Lokomotive begeben und die Z\u00fcge selbst \u00fcber den Kurs fahren. Insgesamt stehen rund 50 authentische Loks zur Verf\u00fcgung, wobei endlich auch Dampfloks mit in den Fuhrpark aufgenommen wurden. Als Lokf\u00fchrer stehen euch zwei Gameplay-Modi zur Verf\u00fcgung. Einmal w\u00e4re da der einfache Modus, bei dem ihr den Zug mit einem Model-Eisenbahn-Controller steuert und dann gibt es noch eine realistischere Variante, die wesentlich komplexere Steuerelemente und bessere Physik aufweist.

Da ihr aber nicht immer und \u00fcberall auf den Strecken sein k\u00f6nnt, d\u00fcrft ihr KI-Fahrer mit den Aufgaben betrauen und diese dann als Lokf\u00fchrer einsetzen. Ansonsten haben die Entwickler die Steuerung der Loks gut hinbekommen und selbst das Command-Interface ist logisch und stimmig.
Die Grafik von Trainz 2004 ist ein zweischneidiges Schwert: W\u00e4hrend die Modelle der Lokomotiven absolut sch\u00f6n aussehen und hochdetailliert sind, ist die Landschaft recht \u00f6de, abwechslungsarm und grandios leblos. Der Sound pr\u00e4sentiert sich ebenfalls durchschnittlich und f\u00e4llt weder positiv noch negativ auf, bis auf das knallige Get\u00f6se der Loks.Fazit<\/strong><\/h3>Wenn ihr ein Faible f\u00fcr Lokomotiven & Co oder gar eine Modell-Eisenbahn im Keller habt, dann k\u00f6nnte Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 das Spiel eurer Wahl sein.
