Fazit

Das hat Crystal Dynamics doch schon besser gekonnt: Erinnert man sich an die Jump&Run-Wurzeln der Kalifornier, wie Gex oder Pandemonium, wirkten diese spielerisch wesentlich origineller und ausgereifter. Whiplashs Gameplay beschränkt sich hingegen auf altbewährte Zutaten mit deutlichen Defiziten bei Kameraführung, Kollisionsabfrage und Leveldesign. Auch technisch hinkt der Titel Konkurrenten wie Ratchet & Clank -abgesehen von den witzigen Animationen- deutlich hinterher. Gerettet werden das tollpatschige Wiesel und das geschundene Karnickel in erster Linie vom schrägen Humor der tierischen Flucht in Ketten, der sich im Lauf des Spiels zwar etwas abnutzt, aber mit seinen verrückten Ideen, Animationen, Sprüchen und Sequenzen immer wieder das Zwerchfell reizt. Versionsunterschiede halten sich übrigens in Grenzen: Zwar läuft das Geschehen auf der Xbox dank 60Hz-Modus etwas flüssiger und bietet deutlich kürzere Ladezeiten. Aber dafür punktet die PS2-Fassung mit besserer Kamerajustierung und Beleuchtung.
