Mit jedem neuen Jahr kommt von Electronic Arts auch eine neue Version ihrer diversen Sportspiele. Nach dem exzellenten PlayStation 2-Einstand von Madden NFL 2001 sind die Hoffnungen bezüglich des PS2-Debüts der NBA Live-Serie dementsprechend hoch. Ob NBA Live 2001 die Erwartungen erfüllen kann, oder ob die Sportspielprofis bei EA langsam Angst vor der Konkurrenz haben müssen, könnt Ihr in unserem Test nachlesen.

Gameplay

Wie immer beweist EA Sports mit dem klasse Intro-Video, dass die Meister der Präsentation in den eigenen Studios arbeiten. Klasse geschnitten und mit einem Song unterlegt, der sofort ins Ohr geht, wird das NBA-Vergnügen vorbereitet.

Auch das Hauptmenü ist gewohnt übersichtlich und alle Optionen und Modi lassen sich schnell und unkompliziert anwählen.
Bei den zur Verfügung stehenden Spielmodi bietet NBA Live 2001 weitestgehend Standardkost. Man hat die Wahl zwischen Freundschaftsspielen, Saison und Playoffs, die man mit den aktuellen NBA-Teams, den obligaten All-Star-Teams des Westens und des Ostens sowie All-Star-Zusammenstellungen der 50er bis 90er Jahre spielen kann. Alternativ kann man auch 1-gegen-1 auf einem Straßencourt bis zu einer bestimmten Punktzahl spielen.

Nachdem man sich für ein Team und einen Modus entschieden und die Spieloptionen eingestellt hat, geht es direkt in die Halle. In fernsehreifen Kamerafahrten werden die Teams vorgestellt und der deutsche Kommentator stimmt auf das Spiel ein.

Dann kann es losgehen.
Die Steuerung, bei der sämtliche Buttons auf dem Pad sowohl in Offensiv- als auch Defensivaktion eingebunden sind, wird NBA Live-Veteranen bekannt vorkommen, wurde sie doch weitestgehend aus den Vorgängern auf der PSOne übernommen und nur durch Feinheiten ergänzt. Da trotz fehlender Konfigurationsoption die Steuerung der Akteure auf dem Platz auch Anfängern keine Probleme bereiten sollte, geht die Entscheidung, sich auf Bewährtes und Erprobtes zu verlassen, absolut in Ordnung.

Das Basketball-Flair kommt während der Begegnungen gut rüber, da zum einen (abhängig vom gewählten Schwierigkeitsgrad) das schnelle Spiel spannend hin und her wogt, zum anderen die KI der CPU gesteuerten Gegner und Mitspieler kaum Wünsche offen lässt.

Dass man nicht auf spektakuläre Dunks und Blocks verzichten muss, die teilweise auch in schönen automatischen Wiederholungen nochmals genossen werden können, ist wohl genauso selbstverständlich wie die immer eingestreuten Statistikeinblendungen oder Kamerafahrten in Spielunterbrechungen.
