Ziel der Entwicklung war offensichtlich, soviel Realität ins Spiel reinzubringen wie es nur möglich ist, was auch hundertprozentig erfüllt wurde. Die Spielbarkeit ist hervorragend. Selbst wenn die Steuerung anfangs kompliziert ist, hat man nach einigen Spielen den Dreh raus. Es sind wirklich alle Spezialtechniken des Basketballs vorhanden; von Alley-Oops bis Slamdunks ist alles möglich. Aber auch alle möglichen Arten von Taktiken, die in dieser Sportart verwendet werden, sind vorhanden.

Gameplay

Man kann entweder ein normales Freundschaftsspiel, eine Meisterschaftsvorrunde zwischen 14 und 82 Spielen und anschließender Playoff-Runde, oder sofort eine Playoff-Runde mit seiner Lieblingsmannschaft beginnen. Der Ablauf eines Spiels ist fast wie eine Fernsehübertragung gestaltet. Es beginnt mit der ritualmäßigen Vorstellung der Mannschaften, wobei die Spieler der Heimmannschaft mit einer Lasershow und Musik angefeuert werden. Man merkt richtig, wenn es zur Sache geht. Das Publikum versucht, ihre Mannschaft anzufeuern oder die gegnerische Mannschaft z.b. beim Freiwurf durcheinanderzubringen. Sogar der Coach der jeweiligen Mannschaft hüpft jedes Mal an der Seitenlinie auf und ab und regt sich über Schiedsrichterentscheidungen auf. Während einer Saison werden über jede einzelne Mannschaft und deren Spieler Statistiken geführt, ebenfalls Rookie-Informationen oder All-Star-Votes. Als zusätzliches Extra kann man sich die Basketballspieler nach eigenen Vorstellungen “zusammenbauen”; sprich: Aussehen, Position und Fähigkeiten zusammenstellen und diese dann entweder in einem NBA-Team oder in einem selbstkreiertem Team aufstellen.
