Mit einer aufgepeppten Tony Hawk-Engine und einem weitestgehend unveränderten Spielprinzip möchte das Team von Runecraft die Erfolge, die Tony Hawk auf vier Rädern einfahren konnte, jetzt mit Mat Hoffmans BMX-Eskapaden wiederholen. Ob das Spiel außer der Halbierung der zur Verfügung stehenden Räder noch weitere Unterschiede zur Genre-Referenz aufweist, versuchen wir in einem Test zu klären.

Gameplay

Man merkt dem Spiel nicht nur im Bereich Grafik an, das die Tony Hawk-Engine verwendet wurde. Auch das Gameplay ist deutlich an dem großen Vorbild ausgerichtet.
Ihr könnt als Einzelspieler wahlweise im Free Ride alle Tricks auf den zur Verfügung stehenden Kursen üben, in der Single Session unter Zeitdruck Punkte sammeln oder im Karrieremodus versuchen, alle Euch gestellten Aufgaben zu erfüllen, um so an Geld für neue Ausrüstung oder neue Kurse zu kommen.

Die Aufgaben sind -ebenfalls analog zu Tony Hawk- in bestimmte Punktzahlen, die man erreichen muss und die “Finden und Sammeln”-Thematik eingeteilt.
Hier liegt eigentlich auch der größte Schwachpunkt von Mat Hoffman´s Pro BMX – denn irgendwie wird man das Gefühl nicht los, das alles schon mal irgendwie da war. Sicher, manche der geforderten Aufgaben sind nur über Umwege, die man erst einmal herausfinden muss, zu lösen, doch im Großen und Ganzen spielt sich Pro BMX wie Pro Skater.
Was einerseits negativ ist, hat jedoch auch einen positiven Effekt. Tony Hawk´s Pro Skater 2 ist schließlich nicht umsonst die Genre-Referenz und die verwendete Engine ist schnell und leistungsfähig.
