Space: The Boring Frontier

Wir befinden uns 28. Jahrhundert und richten unser Augenmerk auf Mace Griffin, einen ballerwütigen Soldaten in einer Spezialeinheit der intergalaktischen Regierung. Als bei einem scheinbar normalen Einsatz so ziemlich alles daneben geht, und nur Mace überlebt, wird er nach einer umstrittenen Gerichtsverhandlung zu zehn Jahren Haft verurteilt.

Seiner Meinung nach wurde er zu Unrecht bestraft und sinnt nach seiner Entlassung auf Rache. Genau deshalb schließt sich der Intelligenzbolzen einem schmierigen, geldgierigen Trupp aus Kopfgeldjägern an…

All-Tag

Im Laufe seiner Karriere muss er insgesamt 13 umfangreiche Missionen auf verschiedenen Planeten absolvieren. Mit Hilfe eines handelsüblichen Raumgleiters mit Hyperantrieb fliegt der Held von Mission zu Mission und muss sich des Öfteren auch mit Raumschlachten in 3D abgeben.

Die Weltraumduelle gestalten sich sehr einfach und sind von der Steuerung her nicht gerade anspruchsvoll. Dennoch schaffen es diese kleinen actionreichen Ausflüge, vom eigentlichen Shooter-Alltag abzulenken.

Jäger der verlorenen Missionsziele

Wesentlich länger müsst ihr euch nämlich in Ego-Perspektive durch die Missionen kämpfen. Dort ballert ihr euch in simpelster Manier von Raum zu Raum, ohne dabei die Freiheit zu genießen, auch mal einen anderen Weg zu nehmen oder gar Geheimräume aufzuspüren – linearer geht es kaum. In den Einsätzen müsst ihr bestimmte Schlüsselobjekte finden, Kontaktpersonen aufstöbern oder auch mal eine Person gefangen nehmen; mehr Abwechslung gibt es nicht.

Besonders nervig ist, dass ihr nach erfolgreicher Mission zurück zum Raumschiff laufen dürft – ein furchtbarer Fauxpas, denn es handelt sich um weite Levels ohne Gegner.

Während der Missionen laufen euch allerdings verdammt viele Feinde vor die Flinte. Dabei reicht das Gegner-Repertoire von feindlichen Söldnern über hässliche Aliens, bösen Mutanten bis hin zum Abschaum des Universums.

Zerfurchte Canyons, abgelegene Fabriken – Hauptsache, die Waffe sitzt und die Munition hält.


Egal wie hässlich euer Gegenüber auch ist, die künstliche Intelligenz ist eigentlich recht gut gelungen: Eure ballerfreudigen Feinde nehmen Deckung hinter bestimmten Objekten und geben sich untereinander Feuerschutz. Wie aber auch in so vielen anderen Spielen, sind gelegentliche Totalausfälle ebenfalls keine Seltenheit.
