Die Viper, unser flinke Raumjäger, ist anfangs immer mit einem Standart-Geschütz ausgerüstet. Je mehr Gegnerformationen er aber in die ewigen Jagdgründe des Weltalls schickt, um so mehr Power-Ups schweben herum. Diese sollten tunlichst aufgesammelt werden, damit spätestens beim Level-Endgegner Plasmawummen, Trippellaser, Raketen und diverse andere Extras zur Verfügung stehen. Ohne diese ist unser Gleiter so gut wie chancenlos.

Grafik /Sound

Wie schon anfangs erwähnt, werden angesichts der Fähigkeiten der PS2 viele Spieler sicherlich ein grafisches Feuerwerk erwarten. Dies bietet Gradius aber ganz sicher nicht.
Die horizontal scrollende 2D-Grafik wurde gegenüber der originalen Version zwar ein wenig überarbeitet, aber dennoch sieht man dem Spiel sein Alter und seine Herkunft mehr als deutlich an.

Gleiches gilt für den Sound. Die musikalische Untermalung läuft dezent im Hintergrund ab und wirkt in keiner Weise aufdringlich. Trotzdem ist sie unspektakulär und kann weder positiv noch negativ überzeugen.

Multiplayer

Wem die 2D-Action zu langweilig ist, der kann sich den Spaß auch mit einem Freund gönnen. Im 2-Spieler-Modus wird immer nach dem Verlust eines virtuellen Lebens gewechselt. So kann man sich in der Pause den Schweiß von den Händen wischen und sich mit Getränken, Essen und sonstigen Dingen versorgen. Auch wenn die Levels die gleichen sind, macht das Game im 2-Spieler-Mode wesentlich mehr Spaß.
