Szenario

Freedom Force versetzt Euch in das Jahr 1962 und zwar nach Liberty City. Doch die eigentliche Handlung beginnt in den unendlichen Weiten des Weltalls. Denn durch einen äußerst unglücklichen intergalaktischen Unfall sind zahlreiche mysteriöse violette Energie X-Kanister in die Erdatmosphäre eingedrungen und auf der Erde gelandet. Einige gingen natürlich auch in Liberty City nieder. Sobald ein Bürger mit der Energie X in Kontakt kommt, entwickeln sich sofort übermenschliche Superkräfte. Normale amerikanische Bürger mutieren zu patriotischen, freiheitsliebenden Helden und die ach so bösen Russen verwandeln sich in grausame, atomare Fieslinge.

Story

Da im Jahre 1962 noch der Kalte Krieg tobt und die Amerikaner zu dieser Zeit Angst vor einem Atomkrieg haben, werden die Ängste durch die mit Energie X verseuchten Super-Russen zur virtuellen Realität. Denn die Superfieslinge klauen eine Packung mit handelsüblichen Atombomben und versuchen, unter anderem durch das Einfrieren des Central Parks, in Liberty City für Unruhe unter den Kapitalisten zu sorgen. Aber es gibt ja noch die patriotischen Helden…

Patriotismus und Comic-Stil

Den US-Patriotismus kennen viele von Euch sicherlich aus den zahllosen Kinofilmen wie Pearl Harbor oder auch dezent bei Spiderman, allerdings wirkt dieser bei Freedom Force nicht ganz so nervig, da auf die entsprechende Flagge verzichtet wurde und das gesamte Szenario durch den Comic-Charme nicht wirklich real wirkt. Um die Atmosphäre weiter aufzubauen, sind alle Zwischensequenzen im Comic-Stil gehalten und zum Ende jeder Mission animiert ein Sprecher mit launigen Kommentaren zum Weiterspielen. Gegner im Spiel werden übrigens immer nur bewusstlos und sterben nie – typisch Comic.
