Frustfaktor: Würfelpech 

Was man bei all dem Gekämpfe natürlich immer im Hinterkopf behalten sollte: Baldur’s Gate 3 ist Dungeons & Dragons. Es wird also ständig gewürfelt und das kann nach 70 bis 80 Stunden Spielzeit langsam ermüdend werden. Ausgehend von der Initiative, die bei potenziell engen Gefechten schon ein wichtiger Gradmesser für den Ausgang sein kann, bis hin zu Angriffswürfen, bei denen selbst mit einer hohen prozentualen Trefferchance immer noch die Möglichkeit besteht, zu verfehlen. Da kann es schon mal passieren, dass der entscheidende Treffer daneben geht und der anschließende Zug des Feindes das Blatt auf ungünstige Art und Weise wendet.

Aus dem Grund wird man in Baldur’s Gate 3 sehr oft die Schnellspeichern- und –laden-Taste bemühen. Während des Tests habe ich weit über 700 Quicksaves angelegt, da manche Kämpfe doch recht knifflig waren beziehungsweise ich erst nach ein paar Versuchen die passende Taktik parat hatte. die Würfel nicht hold und der an und für sich gut geworfene Feuerball machte statt erhofften 40 Schaden gerade einmal 15. In den Kämpfen von Akt 1 fällt das noch nicht unbedingt schwer ins Gewicht, aber spätestens ab Mitte des zweiten Kapitels kann es nervig sein, wenn bestimmte Attacken ins Leere gehen und man sofort weiß, dass man jetzt neu laden darf.

Zu dieser kleinen Problematik trägt die Balance des Schwierigkeitsgrads bei: Während der Entdecker-Schwierigkeitsgrad für Neueinsteiger stets eine gute Herausforderung bietet, ist er für Genrekenner bis auf ein paar einzelne Kämpfe gegen Ende des Spiels zu einfach. Die zweite Stufe bietet sich da schon deutlich eher an, auch, wenn hier ebenfalls im Lategame die Kniffligkeit deutlich anzieht. Den dritten Schwierigkeitsgrad, Taktik, habe ich im Zuge des Tests nicht ausprobiert, aber schon von Mitspielern gehört, dass er auf jeden Fall eine Herausforderung ist und die F5-Taste zum absoluten Dauerfreund wird.

Apropos Würfel… 

Wo wir übrigens beim Thema Würfel sind: Die Würfelproben sind ein ständiger Begleiter in Baldur’s Gate 3. Mal werden sie wie in den Kämpfen oder bei Wahrnehmungschecks im Hintergrund berechnet, bei vielen anderen Proben muss man hingegen selbst aktiv werden. Zum Beispiel beim Schlösser knacken, beim Überzeugen, Täuschen oder Bedrohen in Dialogen oder beim Betrachten von Bildern, deren Herkunft man erst mit Religion oder Arkaner Kunde wirklich zuordnen kann.

Hier spielen natürlich erneut die eigenen Werte des Charakters eine entscheidende Rolle: Jemand, der über wenig Fingerfertigkeit verfügt, wird bei kniffligen Schlössern nur mit sehr viel Glück einen Erfolg verzeichnen

können. Dafür ist aber eventuell gut darin, Menschen zu lesen und kann ihnen ihre Motive bereits durch einen einfachen Blick in die Augen erkennen. Oder er ist wie meine Barbarin fantastisch darin, einen autoritären Stil zu pflegen, und weiß alleine durch die eigene Präsenz, Feinde einzuschüchtern.

Aber egal wie hoch die Werte sind, scheitern werdet ihr immer mal wieder in Baldur’s Gate 3. Das ist aber längst kein Grund, den D20-Würfel ins Korn zu werfen: Ahnlich wie in Disco Elysium, einem der besten Rollenspiele der letzten Jahre, liegt im Misserfolg eine Chance. Eine Chance, die Dinge ein wenig anders zu sehen oder einen Weg zu erleben, den man sonst komplett verpasst hätte. Es klingt zwar sehr abgedroschen, doch das Scheitern gehört zu einem Rollenspiel dieser Klasse dazu und ist nur ein weiterer Aspekt, der den Weg des eigenen Helden prägt.

    gar nichts in der Hinsicht, noch nie rundenbasiertes Kämpfen, noch nie Fantasy RPGs abseits von 15h Skyrim oder so und auch noch nie so tabletop Spiele
