Miniaturisierung zählt zu den drängendsten Themen im VR-Bereich. Auf der gestrigen Oculus Connect wurde der Prototyp des “Half Dome 3”-Headsets daher mit viel Applaus bedacht. Facebooks Ingenieure haben einen Weg gefunden, wie sich ein Varifocal-Display mit üppigen 140 Grad Sichtfeld auch ohne mechanische Teile bauen lässt.

In den Vorgängern bewegten sich hintereinander liegende Linsen noch blitzschnell an die passende Position, um immer an dem Punkt ein möglichst scharfes Bild zu liefern, der gerade von den Augen anvisiert wird. Im neuen Prototyp kommen stattdessen eine ganze Reihe hintereinander angeordneter LCD-Linsen zum Einsatz, die sich je nach Bedarf aktivieren oder deaktivieren lassen.
