2023 sorgte HBO zusammen mit Naughty Dog für einen riesigen Erfolgshit mit der Serienumsetzung von The Last of Us. Eine zweite Staffel war schnell bestätigt, die Dreharbeiten sind sogar schon längst gestartet. Allerdings wird die kommende Season ein wenig kürzer werden.

Insgesamt wird es in The Last of Us: Season 2 zwei Episoden weniger geben, aber das soll nichts Schlechtes bedeuten. Die Entscheidung haben die verantwortlichen Köpfe nämlich aus einem guten Grund getroffen.

The Last of Us: Season 2 wird kürzer, aber alles danach länger

Bekannt ist bereits, dass die Geschichte von The Last of Us Part 2 in mehr als nur einer Staffel erzählt werden soll. Schließlich sei die Geschichte viel zu groß, weshalb die beiden Showrunner Craig Mazin und Neil Druckmann nach einem guten Punkt gesucht haben, um Season 2 von der noch nicht offiziell bestätigten Staffel 3 zu trennen.

Diesen dramaturgischen Einschnitt, so verrät es Mazin in einem Interview mit Deadline, mache man nach sieben Episoden. “Wir wollen die Leute dahingehend beruhigen, dass die Idee einer, im Vergleich zur ersten etwas kürzeren, zweiten Staffel, nicht bedeutet, dass wir uns weniger Zeit nehmen, die Geschichten zu erzählen. Wir wollen uns einfach mehr Zeit nehmen”, heißt es vom Regisseur und Drehbuchautor weiter. Außerdem wolle man dafür sorgen, dass sich jede Folge “wie ein Blockbuster anfühlt.”

Die gute Nachricht? Sollten die Zuschauerzahlen stimmen, wird eine dritte Staffel definitiv größer – und womöglich trotzdem nicht zum Ende kommen. “Wir haben das starke Gefühl, dass – solange die Leute weiter zuschauen und wir noch mehr Folgen produzieren können – Staffel 3 mit Sicherheit deutlich größer ausfallen wird. Und in der Tat könnte die Geschichte eine vierte Staffel erfordern.” Immerhin will das Team in den zukünftigen Folgen erneut ein paar interessante Wege einschlagen, die im Spiel nicht möglich gewesen sind.

Kein Weitererzählen der Geschichte geplant

Im Interview stellen Mazin und Druckmann zudem klar, dass sie nicht über die Vorlage hinaus gehen werden. Eine potenzielle vierte Staffel von The Last of Us würde also weiterhin nur das zweite Spiel abbilden – mehr nicht. Eine Vorgehensweise wie bei Game of Thrones ist für die beiden ausgeschlossen.

Natürlich könnte es aber sein, dass bis dahin längst ein The Last of Us Part 3 erschienen ist. Gerüchte um die Entwicklung eines Nachfolgers hat es in der Vergangenheit immer wieder gegeben, aber bislang folgte keine offizielle Bestätigung. Zuletzt stellte Neil Druckmann jedoch klar, dass man bei Naughty Dog nicht zwingend zum “The Last of Us”-Studio werden möchte.
