Sephiroth, der einflüglige Engel aus Final Fantasy 7, wird am 23. Dezember die ohnehin schon umfangreiche Kämpferriege von Super Smash Bros. Ultimate auf Switch erweitern. Neben dem Gegenspieler von Cloud sind im Kämpfer-Paket #8 auch eine neue Stage, die Nordhöhle, eine Route für den klassischen Modus sowie neun Musikstücke aus der Final-Fantasy-Reihe enthalten.

Sephiroth ist im Fighters Pass Vol. 2 enthalten, der auch Min Min aus Arms sowie auf Steve & Alex aus Minecraft umfasst. Drei weitere Kämpfer-Pakete sind noch geplant. Alternativ kann das Kämpfer-Paket 8 separat gekauft werden. Game Director Masahiro Sakurai stellt den neuen DLC-Kämpfer im folgenden Video ausführlich vor. Sephiroth ist nach Cloud der zweite spielbare Charakter aus Final Fantasy 7, der sich ins Getümmel von Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stürzt.

Außerdem ist bereits die Sephiroth-Herausforderung als zeitlich begrenztes Event angelaufen, in dem die Spieler einen Bosskampf gegen den ikonischen Bösewicht bestreiten können. Wer den Fighters Pass Vol. 2 oder das Kämpfer-Paket 8: Sephiroth besitzt und die Herausforderung besteht, kann Sephiroth und seine Stage vorzeitig freischalten. Die Herausforderung ist bis zum 23. Dezember um 2:00 Uhr verfügbar.

Des Weiteren wird am 23. Dezember das achte Mii-Kämpfer-Kostüme-Paket erscheinen. Es enthält Mii-Kostüme zu den Charakteren Aerith, Tifa und Barret sowie ein Chocobo-Outfit – allesamt aus der Final-Fantasy-Reihe. Ein Geno-Kostüm aus Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars ist ebenfalls dabei.
