Ab morgen wird PlayStation 3-Nutzern eine neue Version des Clients für Folding@Home zur Verfügung stehen. Wer seine Konsole bereits fleißig Proteine falten lässt, um das Forschungsprojekt der Standford-Universität zu unterstützen, dürfte die frische Version beim nächsten Login automatisch erhalten.

Der neue Client bietet u.a. ein paar Optimierungen, um die Berechnungen noch weiter zu beschleunigen, außerdem können die Teilnehmer nun längere Teamnamen sowie Nutzernamen verwenden. Ebenfalls überarbeitet wurde die Lokalisierung der Teilnehmer via IP.

Sonys Angaben zufolge haben sich bisher über 250.000 PS3s an dem Projekt beteiligt, die in Fließkommaberechnungen pro Sekunde (FLOPS) angebene Rechenkapazität des auf verteilter Berechnung basierenden Unterfangens habe sich seit dem Launch des PS3-Clients mehr als verdoppelt. Die Berichterstattung darüber dürfte auch einen weiteren positiven Nebeneffekt gehabt und dem Folding-Projekt etwas mehr Aufmerksamkeit verschafft haben: im gleichen Zeitraum ist die Zahl der Nutzer mit PC-Clients um 20 Prozent gewachsen.
