Doch welche Stars tummeln sich eigentlich auf der Konsole? Schon seit Dezember 2023 ist klar, dass GTA 6 nicht für die PS4, sondern die PlayStation 5 und Xbox Series X|S erscheinen wird. Gerüchten zufolge könnte das Spiel zudem mit der PS5 Pro kompatibel sein. Wer noch mit der älteren Konsolengeneration ausgestattet ist, muss bis zum Release von Grand Theft Auto VI also upgraden.

Wie viele Nutzerinnen und Nutzer das tatsächlich betrifft, ist allerdings neu – und überrascht. Denn laut dem Gaming-Reporter und Betreiber des Newsletters Game Files, Stephen Totilo, hat Sony zwar rund 59 Millionen PS5-Konsolen verkauft. Das entspricht jedoch nur 50 Prozent der insgesamt angegebenen 118 Millionen monatlich aktiven Nutzer*innen (MAU).

Auf Twitter postete Totilo dazu: “Zu Beginn dieser Woche machte Sony Schlagzeilen, weil die PS5 59 Millionen Mal verkauft wurde. Eine gute Zahl! Laut Sony befindet sich die PS5 in der 2. Hälfte ihres Lebenszyklus. Sony gab außerdem bekannt, dass PlayStation 118 Millionen monatlich aktive Nutzer hat – die Hälfte davon nutzt immer noch die PS4. Habt ihr das verstanden? Die HÄLFTE der PS-Spieler ist nicht auf der aktuellen Generation”

“Langsamer Übergang von PS4 zu PS5”

Während sich Sony-Präsdident Hiroki Totoki den Entwicklungen gegenüber positiv gestimmt zeigt – Totilo zitiert ihn mit den Worten “Die Überschneidung der Konsolengeneration wird also gut gehandhabt werden und die MAU wird stetig steigen” –, schätzt Daniel Ahmad, Direktor für Forschung und Insights bei Niko Partners (Erforschung und Analyse der Videospielmärkten in Asien, Nahost und Nordafrika) die Lage skeptischer ein: “Auf der Konsole sind die MAUs im PlayStation Network seit dem Start der PS5 kaum noch gestiegen. Es war nur ein langsamer Übergang von PS4 > PS5″

Dafür, dass so viele PS4-Spieler mit einem Upgrade auf die PS5 gewartet haben beziehungsweise weiterhin mit der älteren Generation der Konsole zufrieden sind, gibt es einen Grund. Mat Piscatella, Executive Director und Video Game Industry Advisor bei Circana, hat in einem Tweet darauf hingewiesen, dass “die meistgespielten Spiele in den USA […] Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, Grand Theft Auto V und Call of Duty [sind]. Jede Konsole, die einen Großteil oder alle 5 dieser Spiele abspielen kann, ist für viele Menschen genau richtig.”

Wer bislang also bequem mit der PS4 durchs Leben gekommen ist, aber keinesfalls GTA 6 verpassen möchte, muss sich wohl oder übel zur nächsten Konsolengeneration bekennen.
