Eine kurze Geschichte der Videospiele

Einige von euch werden vielleicht schon etwas zu jung dafür sein: Aber es gab eine Zeit, in der man hat seinen PC samt Monitor zu den Freund*innen geschleppt, um stundenlang gemeinsam zu zocken. Internet war damals halt noch wirklich überwiegend Neuland.

Neben Counter-Strike, Battlefield, Age of Empires hat sich zu der Zeit noch ein anderer Klassiker etabliert: Die Flatout-Reihe. Chaotische Rennen mit zu damaliger Zeit beeindruckenden Knautschzonen und jeder Menge Minispiele (Bowling! Hochsprung! Fußball!) sorgten für einen Heidenspaß und für Ärger von den Nachbarn, weil man zu laut lacht. Nun kann man das Franchise auch auf dem Steam Deck spielen – dank eines überraschenden Updates.

Flatout: Alle Serienteile unterwegs spielen

Wer die Reihe in den letzten Jahren übrigens nicht verfolgt hat, hier ein kurzer Abriss: Nach den beiden ersten fantastischen Serienteilen fuhr das Franchise nach einem Publisher-Wechsel samt Austausch des Entwickler*innen-Studios an die Wand. Davon konnte sich die Reihe nie wieder erholen, während das Originalteam mit Wreckfest einen zumindest geistigen Nachfolger auf die Strecke brachte.

Und während alle dachten, dass Flatout so langsam in Vergessenheit gerät, schnappte sich Zoom Platform (nicht zu verwechseln mit der Videotelefonie-Software) die Rechte an den Klassiker-Teilen. Nun lieferte das Team aus dem Nichts ein Update für alle (relevanten) Flatout-Spiele, die überraschend einige Verbesserungen parat halten.

Zum einen könnt ihr ab sofort alle Flatout-Spiele direkt auf dem Steam Deck spielen, denn sie sind nun offiziell verifiziert. Darüber hinaus gibt es Unterstützung für den Steam Workshop (Mods!) und für die Cloud. Damit aber nicht genug, denn die Updates haben noch mehr an Bord.

Rückkehr des Multiplayer-Modus

Im Falle von Flatout 2 könnt ihr jetzt auch wieder den Mehrspieler-Modus nutzen, der zuvor im Zuge der Abschaltung von GameSpy vor etlichen Jahren sein jähes Ende fand. Seit dem Patch ist OpenSpy.net, ein Open Source-Klon des einstigen Multiplayer-Providers, mit an Bord.

Zudem gibt es im ersten Flatout fortan Widescreen-Unterstützung (bis 21:9) und bei Flatout: Ultimate Carnage wurde Games for Windows Live entfernt. Auch der Launcher des Rennspiels ist zukünftig vollkommen optional. Wer angesichts der Updates Benzin schmecken möchte, der darf sich freuen: Die Flatout-Reihe ist passenderweise im Angebot.

So erhaltet ihr Flatout für 1,39 Euro, den Nachfolger für 1,99 Euro oder Ultimate Carnage für 3,90 Euro. Alternativ könnt ihr auch das Anthology Pack für 9,35 Euro einsacken, müsst dann aber damit leben, dass Flatout 3 Teil eurer Bibliothek ist. Als Besitzer eines Steam Deck könnt ihr euch übrigens auch auf etwas ganz anderes freuen: Neva.
