Der erste Animationsfilm zu Super Mario Bros. war ein riesiger Erfolg, eine Fortsetzung nur eine Frage der Zeit. Wenige Stunden vor der geplanten Nintendo Direct meldete sich Shigeru Miyamoto deshalb zu Wort und verriet den Veröffentlichungstermin von Der Super Mario Bros. Film 2.

Zugegeben: Das ist nicht der offizielle Titel. Noch gibt es nämlich keinen Namen für das Sequel, weshalb wir einfachheitshalber eine simple zwei an den Namen des Vorgängers heften. Auch Miyamoto selbst nennt noch keinen richtigen Namen, aber ihr könnt euch ein bestimmtes Datum bereits im Kalender rot markieren.

Der Super Mario Bros. Film 2: Drei Jahre für eine Fortsetzung

Der Mario-Erfinder Shigeru Miyamoto schnappte sich den japanischen Twitter-Account von Nintendo und verkündete, dass Der Super Mario Bros. Film 2 am 24. April 2026 in die Kinos kommt – zumindest in Japan. In den USA, so heißt es in einer zusätzlichen Pressemitteilung, fällt der Startschuss bereits am 3. April 2026.

Die Lichtspielhäuser in den anderen Ländern sollen ebenfalls im April mit dem zweiten Animationsfilm rund um den ikonischen Schnauzbartträger beliefert werden. Ein genauer Termin ist hier allerdings noch nicht festgelegt.

Sicher ist nur damit, dass der zweite (technischen gesehen der dritte) Super Mario Bros.-Film ziemlich genau drei Jahre benötigt. Im April 2023 eroberte die Adaption von Illumination erstmals die Kinosäle dieser Welt und war einer der finanziell erfolgreichsten Filme des vergangenen Jahres. Kein Wunder also, dass Nintendo, das Animationsstudio und Universal Pictures auch für die Fortsetzung ein weiteres Mal eng zusammenarbeiten.

Der Super Mario Bros. Film 2 ist aber nicht das einzige große Kinoprojekt, welches sich derzeit bei Nintendo in Produktion befindet. Auch eine Verfilmung von The Legend of Zelda macht sich auf den Weg, dürfte aber noch deutlich länger auf sich warten lassen. Immerhin handelt es sich dabei um eine Adaption mit echten Schauspieler*innen, die Hyrule zum Leben erwecken sollen.
