Cantata befindet sich bereits seit einiger Zeit in Entwicklung und wie Publisher Modern Wolf jetzt bekannt gegeben hat, wurde der bei Afterschool Studio entstehenden Titel ins eigene Programm aufgenommen. Einen Termin für die Veröffentlichung des Spiels gibt es allerdings noch nicht. Wer sich schon jetzt einen Eindruck verschaffen möchte, kann das dafür anhand einer auf Steam verfügbaren Demo tun.

Cantata vereint Elemente, die man nicht nur aus dem Bereich der Rundentaktik kennt, da hier auch Basisbau und das Erkunden großer Einsatzgebiete eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Scharmützel sollen nicht nur kleine Gefechts-Puzzles sein; stattdessen gehe es darum langfristig effektiv zu planen. Dabei spiele u.a. die Aufklärung eine entscheidende Rolle, um Gefahrenherde nicht zu übersehen, zu denen auch die Flora und Fauna das Planeten Shoal zähle.

Eine weitere Besonderheit ist der Basisbau, bei dem verschiedene Gebäude über Versorgungslinien so miteinander verbunden werden, dass Ressourcen zwischen ihnen transportert werden können, während feindliche Kommandanten dank einer durchdachten Erzählung mehr sein sollen als gesichtslose KI-Schachspieler. Wer lieber gegen Freunde oder Unbekannten antritt, dürfe dies schließlich online und auch lokal tun.

Wer will, kann mit Cantata außerdem komplett eigene Kampagenen erstellen, denn das Spiel soll vom Start weg voll modifizierbar sein. Es werde nicht nur einen Leveleditor geben, sondern auch die Möglichkeit eigene Regeln und Sprites einzubinden. Bleibt die Frage, ob man Letzteres möchte, denn das hauseigene Artdesign scheint eindeutig zu den Stärken der ungewöhnlichen Rundentaktik zu gehören.
